We would like to describe the visit to Greece that took place in Galatsi from 31/3/2014 to 4/4/2014.
On Monday morning we visited the Mayor of Galatsi and then the visitors of all countries arrived at our school which had prepared a small welcome festivity for our visitors.
After having lunch we headed to Marathon where we visited the famous Tomb of Marathon, and the Marathon Run Museum where we learned a lot of information about the Olympic Games and the Marathon race.
After the museum we visited the winery of Marathon and we returned
to the hotel. Later at night our school had prepared a “Greek night” with local traditional dances and songs.
The next day we woke up early in the morning. We visited the Acropolis of Athens with the Parthenon,
where we admired this unique monument which was built by Pericles during the
Golden Age (500B.C). There the tour guide talked to us about the Parthenon and the
historical centre of Athens. Then we visited the Ancient Agora
of Classical Athens. Later we visited the new Acropolis
Museum which is one of the most important museums in the world. At night we
went to the port of Piraeus and
had dinner near the sea.
On Wednesday we travelled to Delfi where we visited the Oracle
and the Archaeological Museum of Delfi. In the ancient oracle Pythia
was
widely credited for her prophecies inspired by Apollo. Her oracles were short and
enigmatic. Later we went to Arachova,
a place which has known touristic development through the years. We had lunch with
tasty traditional Greek food and we also stopped at Distomo then returning
back to the hotel.
Thursday was the day when we visited Athens
again. During our tour in the center of our historical town we stopped at the Panathenaic (Kallimarmaro) Stadium where the first Olympic Games in
the world took place in 1896 after the suggestion of the French Pierre de
Coubertin.
We visited the National Archaeological Museum
of Athens and then we had 2 hours to take a small walk in Ermou street.
After having supper in a famous tavern in Monastiraki we got to Sounion.
There is the Temple of Poseidon, which was built on the
summit of the rock, in honor of the Greek god of the sea Poseidon. We
stayed there long enough to enjoy the beautiful sunset over the Aegean sea.
The first destination was the island of Hydra: a small but very beautiful
island. After we walked around we
returned to the cruise ship and had lunch. The next Island was Poros.
The last destination was the island of Aegina.
We visited the Temple of Aphaia
Athina and the monastery of Aghios Nectarios.
Our meeting in our country with our Comenius Family was extremely interesting. We enjoyed our time together with our classmates and teachers from other countries and it was definitely a lifetime experience.
